Chungnam Province's Fisheries Resources Research Institute announced on the 28th that as a result of conducting radiation tests on marine products caught and produced in the province this year using a high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometer, iodine (131I) and cesium (134Cs+137Cs) were not detected in any samples, confirming their safety.
Since the first release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in August of last year, the province has been strengthening radiation inspections on all marine products caught and produced in the province to alleviate public anxiety.
This year, 43 varieties and 248 samples of marine products, including seaweed, whiteleg shrimp, blue crab, and hairtail, were collected from farms and wholesale markets in the province and tested. All samples were found to be safe with non-detectable levels of radiation.
The inspection results can be checked every time through the provincial website (https://www.chungnam.go.kr/fisheryl.do).
Choi Chang-sik, head of the Provincial Seafood Safety Center, said, "We additionally installed beta-nuclide analysis equipment in September this year, and after going through a proficiency process, we plan to additionally analyze tritium (3H) in addition to cesium and iodine from January next year. We will do our best to supply marine products that are safe from radiation."
